today maris showed me a section of the tv show, THE VIEW, that had a quote from rush limbaugh on it. i’ve never really been a fan of rush limbaugh, and after hearing this video my opinion of him hasn’t really changed any. i feel like what he says in this video is the mindset of alot of people in america. i hear guys in the pipe shop, and i personally know people in the church who think this way, and it hurts…frustrates…and disappoints me to know that people think like this. please watch the video (first 45 seconds or so) and let me know what you think about his remarks(this means you…blog lurker…i know you’re there…we’d love to hear your thoughts).
I’ve got to be honest and say i am not a view fan, but I am not a Limbaugh fan either.
With that said, Limbaugh was truly out of line and off base.
I am so tired of race and gender being an issue. I’m sick of hearing about it, I’m sick of watching it used as “selling” points and I’m sick of the attitude of “against” something.
Sorry for the rant. I think you are justified in your disappointment.
Christians need to be cautious, whatever their stance in this election, that it not become about voting against something. I can’t stand that attitude. It’s like they aren’t voting for anything. Seems to me Christians should be the first people excited about race and gender NOT being an issue, but instead being a part of the process.
Alright, well I should be careful how I answer this…
I think his remarks were completely out of line, BUT what was the rest of the conversation he was having? Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying his comments where ok, but I am interested to hear who he was talking to, more about the conversation etc.
I would also like to say that he isn’t the only one who says things and later regrets them. Again, I’m not saying he was right by any means, but I know I have said things that came out wrong, sounded bad, and I didn’t realize it till later. He does need to be extremely careful because he has such an open forum for millions to see that will scrutinize and analyze everything that is said.
If you find the whole interview or whatever it was I’d be interested in reading it. It is sad that someone, anyone, would make a remark like that just because of the color of skin or the genitals a person has.
Thank God Jesus loves me because of who He is and not who I am.
Dustin
I hear something different than what you probably got. I’d be curious to hear Limbaugh’s comment in context. While perhaps it’s not wise words on Limbaugh’s part, I have voiced something similar. Not because I’m racist or sexist, but I don’t think realistically this country is going to vote for a woman President AND a black VP or vice versa at the same time. The thought is, you’re going to have some people thinking “well, I’d vote for a black man, but I don’t want a woman on the ticket,” or vice versa.
Two firsts at once might be a little much to ask. I don’t know. I’m all for a black president (if I like his political stances). I’m not sure about a woman president. I’ve yet to form any solid opinions on that.
don’t get me wrong,I am not standing up for rush, so don’t accuse me of that. I would like to hear more of what he said then just 10 seconds of his show. I don’t lesson to rush nor do i agree with everything he has says. Now if he was saying that about them because she is a women and he is black then shame on him, thats awful, but if said that because of what those two people stand for well i agree with him. It has nothing to do with color or sex of the person, I just don’t like what either one of them stands for. and i do agree if they run together they don’t stand much of a chance to win. and yes bush racism pisses me off as well. Tell you the truth it makes me sick to my stomach. later bud.
Why can’t we see Obama as more than a “black man?” or Hillary more than a “woman?” They are people chasing after a dream. Is this not what America is said to be all about? I think the point of this was not about who Rush is voting for or who we should be voting for or who America will “realistically” vote for. This is about his ill attitude toward somebody that is not like him.
what a surprise…Andrew disagrees.
Did anyone else notice how he said “a black”
wow that doesn’t sit too well with me.
That’s retarded.
Jamie, that bothered me too.
Rush has been an idiot for a long time. I live in Birmingham and thank God men like Rush didn’t succeed. I can sit where I want, vote without taking a test and go to the college I want to. Thank you to the men and women that didn’t wonder if America was ready.
inWorship – the view interests me at times…i wouldn’t call myself a fac. no apologies for the rant…well recieved
dustin – i don’t think i really need the rest of the converation with this one. his words, his tone, and his sarcastic laugh says enough. it’s pretty obvious that he thinks because a woman & ‘a black’ are running…it means they have no chance to win. he might regret it later on, but for now this comment, in my opinion, is uncalled for.
andrew – i think you & i always hear something different. again…this comment alone is uncalled for…no matter the context. “two firsts at once might be a little much to ask”? i’m not sure i understand that mindset. why is to much to ask? are we continually going to blindly always agree & think that an old white man should be running this country? to say yes is to still say that blacks & women are inferior to white men. i’m pretty sure i don’t agree with that.
jordan – not going to accuse you of sticking up for him man. again, i think the comment stands on it’s own. he say’s they don’t have a prayer right after stating the obvious fact that one is ‘a black’ & one is a woman. it sounds to me he is saying they will be defeated because they are a black & a woman. that statement with his tone is modern under the radar racism at it’s best.
maris – great thought babe.
ivey –
jamie – totally…that’s what makes the most angry. in 5 years someone calls my son ‘A BLACK’…let’s just say we will have a few words.
brody – you are just trying to piss her off aren’t you.
drew – great words man.
What I’m saying is NOT that I wouldn’t vote for the right woman and black man on the same ticket. But will America? I think some Americans still see that “old white man” President and don’t want anything different. The unfortunate fact is that 1.) racism still exists, and 2.) sexism is alive and well. On the other hand, if the tickets were something to the effect of Condee Rice/Colin Powell facing Obama/Clinton then we could finally throw the whole race/sex argument out the window and vote for candidates.
I want to clarify my previous comment: “Two firsts at once might be a little much to ask.” What I meant is that people fight change. Neither a woman, nor a black man have ever been President. It’s an undeniable fact, and stating it isn’t racism or sexism. That’s what Rush was getting at, although I agree it was very poorly expressed.
racism does still exist & it’s people like rush limbaugh that keep fueling this fire with his subtle comments. even if he didn’t intend to be racist they come across as that. he said ‘a black’…did you catch that? “A BLACK” he didn’t even acknowledge Obama as a man. the comment ‘a black’ comes across way bad for me. that’s right up there with ‘boy’ ‘nigger’ and whatever else racial slurs we use to say…even though we preface it with “i’m not a racist, but…(insert slur or joke here)” .
if we keep making excuses for people that ‘fight change’…change will never occur. it’s time for our generation to step up & continue the fight that guys like MLK fought & died for. i won’t make excuses for people with racist mindsets. especially if they are ‘christian’. those two don’t go together…and i honestly have no tolerance for it even if it were my own family members that think like this. to degrade & think less of a person based on color of skin & gender is completely wrong…i don’t care who you are.
ok, so I think my age and lack of experience becomes more evident as I contemplate this subject.
As I watched that, the moment he said “a black” a red flag went up. I know absolutely nothing about this rush guy but my thoughts (so far) on his comment are this. While there are an undeniably large number of Americans who think the same way as he does, that doesn’t make it acceptible. These are two PEOPLE running for president. And nothing else to me. I know that my vote is going to be for a candidate… Not a “woman” or “a black”, but a candidate.
I actually overheard people I respect and like make similar comments. That’s another reason I love finding like-minded bloggers. Makes me feel like I’m not so crazy for feeling the way I do.
It is simply ignorance. Only ignorance can make comments like this.
What about saying the words “a black” makes this a racist comment? Can we no longer refer to the color of skin as a descriptor? Why does everyone want to assume the worst? Can’t we assume Rush meant the best? Is it right to hate the hater? Or does that make us worse?
oh and Brody yes you are pissing me off!
andrew… i think you’re taking this discussion in an entirely different direction than it was intended. it feels kinda like no matter what sort of rebuttal you get from your comments, it always goes back to the same thing in your head.
try and hear what we’re saying.
yes, it irked me that rush called obama a black. i’d even go so far as to say it offended me. the way he used the term was derogatory. but it would have been an entirely different story if he’d used the term in a positive–or even normal–way. the world is made up of people of many colors… that’s part of the beauty of it. but when you start belittling people because they’re a different color than you… that’s when there’s a problem.
As a non-American looking in through the window his comments don’t surprise me. I’ve never felt, from what I’ve seen and read, that America was as “free” or as liberated as it thinks it is. Hollywood and TV create a flase sense of a perfect world that simply does not exist. It could… with a little effort, but at this stage I too have my doubts if America is ready to accept either a “black” or a woman as their leader. We’ll have to wait and see… I will be very pleased to be proven wrong.
As for Rush himself, I think the man may have been simply stating his own doubts about the state of the average USA citizen mindset, but since I don’t know him I can’t really comment beyond those few words.
I do know I like and trust Whoopi Goldberg, having listened to her when she was over in Africa and finding her comments remarkably objective and unprejudiced.
I am glad that Limbaugh made this comment. Do I agree with it? Absolutely not. However, for far too long, people like Limbaugh have been the drum bangers for conservatives and Christians usually fall in line. I, as a Christian, have always been repulsed by this. When Limbaugh makes statements like this, Christians who have been blind puppets of Limbaugh and others of his ilk should get a notice of conviction. God is not a Republican or a Democrat.
andrew – no comment.
ginger – thank you
michelle – thanks for the non-american perspective. glad you’re here.
jeff – great words man
Whether Rush agrees with what he said or if he is just making an observation it saddens me that people still make comments like this or even believe this way in what people have fought for so long to over come (however don’t get me wrong I am glad for the freedom that allows people to make statements of their beliefs or opinions like this without being thrown in prison or beheaded. Remember it’s that same freedom that allows us to have this conversation now….I digress.)
On the flip side what is also sad is that many americans will vote for Hillary or Obama simply for the novelty of having the first Black president or first Woman president regardless of what they stand for or their ability to lead this country. I have a co-worker who voted in the recent local election based solely on who’s name she recognized from the sign’s she saw around town. I am afraid this is the mentality of a large portion of Americans. Regardless of how you vote you should make an informed vote.
ahhh…. I typed a very long comment, but wordpress ate it. I love technology. I now don’t have much time but here’s my thoughts in a nutshell…
The fact that we are obsessed with the fact that Obama is “a black” (blech, I hate that descriptor) and Hillary is a woman shows that we have not come very far. Are we calling McCain “a white”? Of course not! It should be the same for all candidates. I recognize that either being the democratic candidate would be huge and should be celebrated, but it should be the reason we do (or don’t) vote for someone.
The cadidates and the media just need to FINALLY stand up and say — this is what I believe and what I don’t. And then we can vote for the person which we agree with the most. It seems almost too simplistic.
