i met a guy named rob, who plays bass for the youth band at The Austin Stone, this morning at a coffee shop called Dominican Joe. it was an awesome hang. This guy has his head on his shoulders, and he has a huge heart for God. He’s only 20, but i know God has some huge plans for his life. the guy is a Spanish major for crying out loud…i can’t even ask where the bathroom is in spanish. I could see him living in South America one day. I look forward to hanging with him more as the year progresses.
i love this coffee shop. I learned yesterday that a lady i know that goes to our church owns this place. She lives half the year in the US & half the year in the Dominican Republic. She started this coffee shop to help raise money for the ministries & work that they are doing in the DR. their ministry, Makarios, is dedicated to providing educational opportunities and vocational training for the impoverished in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Makarios provides the coffee for Dominican Joe. they also have a blog. Here’s what they say about their coffee:
“Dominican Joe’s primary coffee is purchased from Makarios, an Austin-based non-profit organization doing educational development work in the Dominican Republic. Skipping the large corporate middle-man, Makarios works directly with farmers in the region and pays them higher wages and supports their communities in an effort to develop self-sustaining skills for the future.”
this is the kind of coffee shop that i can get behind. this is where i will be doing all of my meeting with people. i just emailed sharla about a part time job here. hopefully i didn’t sound too desperate
. i used to work at Espresso Joes in Murfreesboro and loved it. i’d love to work at a cool place like this.

If you’re ever in Denton, Jupiter House has some amazing brews.
It’s not the coziest of coffee shops, but it’s the best I’ve found in Denton so far. And it seems to be the heart of the small writing community. Also, they sell guitars
